Keeping books based on popular TV and movie characters is tough; for one thing, there are so many out there that it's impossible to have every show and movie. They also tend to not be made well for multiple checkouts. Thank goodness for the 5 Minute Stories series. Each volume collects a variety of stories based on the most popular shows or movies in a relatively sturdy format. Not only does 5-Minute Star Wars Stories Strike Back include stories about old favorites such as Luke Skywalker and Yoda, but it also includes new favorites from The Force Awakens (Rey, Finn, BB-8, etc), as well as two stories based on The Last Jedi!
If you've seen the trailers for The Last Jedi, you've probably noticed the little bird-like creatures featured throughout the commercials. Those are called porgs, ladies and gentlemen, and could be the most divisive creatures since the Ewoks (Star Wars can trend dangerously cute for some fans). Chewie and the Porgs features the apparent bond that Chewbacca and the porgs form on the island of Ahch-To (the planet on which Luke lives; I hope someone actually says it so that I know how it's pronounced).
Cobalt Squadron introduces us to the mechanics and pilots of Cobalt Squadron, including Rose Tico, a new main character who figures prominently in the new movie.
We love the DK Star Wars easy readers! They are great for fans not ready for the longer chapter books. Heroes of the Galaxy focuses on the three young heroes of The Last Jedi (Finn, Rey, and Rose) and their adventures.
Captain Phasma will apparently address how Captain Phasma escapes the garbage chute and tries to rejoin the First Order. The Star Wars comics in our YA section are always super popular, as I'm sure this one will be. We're playing catch up with the comics; we recently received Star Wars 5 and 6 (not to correspond with the movies; these are adventures that occur apart from the movies).
Claudia Gray's Star Wars novels (one YA novel and one adult novel) have garnered her plenty of new fans. Leia, Princess of Alderaan is her second YA Star Wars novel; this follows teenage Leia before the events of A New Hope and the beginning of the Rebel Alliance. Younger fans will want to check out A Leader Named Leia or I Am a Princess; chapter book readers will enjoy Princess Leia: Royal Rebel and Moving Target.
Rey to the Rescue is our latest Rey-centric book for young fans (also check out Rey's Survival Guide). This is one of the more simpler DK Star Wars books, making it ideal for beginning readers of Star Wars stories. Look for Rey's Journey out in January!
It didn't take long for all copies of Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know: Expanded and Updated to be snatched up by eager fans! This is the updated version, obviously, of the 2015 guidebook.
While there's nothing overly mature about the Star Wars comics in our YA section, it would be awesome to have more Star Wars comics for younger readers. The Rise of a Hero isn'r really a comic; it's an illustrated recreation of Luke's journey in A New Hope. At 47 pages, it's a very basic retelling of the story, but a solid one for young fans.
And finally, the piece de resistance of the 2017 Star Wars books: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary. This sucker won't be released until the Friday before the movie opens in the US; don't read this until you have seen the movie, as these Visual Dictionary books always contain a ton of detail about the characters and events in the books (libraries and bookstores sign agreements that these books have a strict on-sale/on display date). It's written by long-time Star Wars guru and creative executive at Lucasfilm, Pablo Hidalgo.
