I hate to do this to The Wednesday Wars, because I love it and I would love to see Gary Schmidt win a Newbery.
But.
Here's my new favorite.
Ying Chang Compestine.
Remember her name and the title of her book: Revolution is Not a Dinner Party.
You want your preteens or teens to "get" what happened in China during the Cultural Revolution in the 1970s?
Have them read this book.
This is a strong year for Newbery contenders. The Newbery committee has a lot to deal with. There are a number of candidates that would definitely be worthy of the award.
Will Revolution is Not a Dinner Party be named the Newbery medalist next Monday?
Crossing my fingers!
